St Johns Camberwell

A Daily Examen

A form of reflection on the gift of each day.

Sit or kneel relaxed but alert…

Gently close your eyes…

Become conscious of your breathing…

follow each breath…

Breathe deep….

Let each breath flow through your body like a blessing…

Begin to remember the day now past…

And let come what comes when you first ask…

When was I best able to give and receive love…?

What caused an increase in my faith, hope and love…?

Out of all I experienced this day, is there one moment I feel most grateful for…?

Cherish these moments… Give thanks…

Did I feel myself being prompted or nudged in any particular way…?

When was I aware or most aware of God’s presence…?

What drew me God…?

Where did I feel least able to give or receive love…?

Where did I fail to notice or respond to God’s love at work in me…?

Without harsh judgement, examine that experience…

In the light of God’s gracious love and mercy – what would you say about that event, that moment, that experience…?

What do you hear God say to you…?

Remembering that God never withholds forgiveness… never refuses a penitent heart… but longs for us to set-aside whatever hinders intimacy with him… listen for his response to you…

And now, coming back to the present…

…what understanding… what insight… what revelation have you received from your experiences this day…?

…what gift or gifts have you received this…?

Pray for the grace to rest this night and to begin the new day with love, faith, and hope…

Pray for the grace to learn from and understand more of what life gives us…

Pray for the grace to continue to recognise God in our daily life… Amen.
